The True Vine Evangelism Program Chapter Six, Week Six Part Two Salvation: What Man Must Do In this two-part instruction we first talked about Salvation in terms of what God has done, but now we must address what man must do. As it is with any relationship it is a two way street. Certainly God is in charge, yet he has given man free will. Man has the freedom to choose the freedom to say yes or no. There of course are benefits and also consequences depending on what we choose. Man’s part of salvation is much easier than God’s part. God gave his only begotten son to die for our salvation. Man’s part is that he must repent of all sin and return to God in faith. Man must not be ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. In this part of the chapter we will address what man must do in order to be saved. God has done his part, now man must likewise do his part. This lesson will instruct how important it is to hear God’s word and believe and put this into action. Read Luke 19:1-10 Jesus Comes to Zacchaeus’ House 1 Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. 145 “But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. (Psalms 13:5)” 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. 7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
What questions do you have after reading this? ________________________________________ _________________________________________ Answer the following questions: The first part that man must do to receive salvation is repent. Read Jonah 3:1-10 Jonah Preaches at Nineveh 1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a threeday journey in extent. 4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 148 The People of Nineveh Believe 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish? 10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it. What questions do you have after reading this? ________________________________________ ________________________________________ Answer the following questions: What is the key ingredient to repentance? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ Nineveh repented and what did God do? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ What important role did Jonah play in the salvation of Nineveh? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ Read John 5:1-13 A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda 1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 151 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” 11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’” 12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. What questions do you have after reading this? ________________________________________ _________________________________________ Answer the following questions: What did this man do to receive his healing? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ For 38 years he waited and what did Jesus ask him? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ After this man obeyed what he received his healing? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ Who were the witnesses and what did they do? _________________________________________ _________________________________________
Read John 1:11,12 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: What questions do you have after reading this? ________________________________________ ________________________________________ Answer the following questions: When Jesus came, did his own people believe? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ What happened to those who did believe? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ Why is it important to repent and believe? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ The second part of salvation is what man must do, what must he believe? _________________________________________ _________________________________________
Read Romans 10:8-17 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”(that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” Israel Rejects the Gospel 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “ How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “LORD, who has believed our report?” 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. What questions do you have after reading this? ________________________________________ _________________________________________ Answer the following questions: The third part of what man must do for salvation is confession, what must he confess? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ Is the word to salvation near to us? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ How can we get faith to believe? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ In order to be saved a man must: 1. Repent of his sins 2. Believe in the power of Jesus 3. Confess Jesus to be his Lord and Savior "For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him." Romans 10:11,12 Jesus is just as able to save the Gentile that calls upon him as he is the Jew even though by documented history the Gospel came to the Jews first. No one is sent to one particular group of people or place before they are sent to the other. In other words there is no order based upon preferential treatment. God prefers us all! God so loved the world! Again, that's all of the world! There is no command that says, go to the far distances of the world before you can go to those nearest to you. The point is, we must start right where we are at! Reach all that we can right where we are, and if there is an outreach that extends beyond where you are and God calls you to it, he will put you there so that it becomes, right where you are! Your own people, your own family, and your own friends are the best place to start influencing others with the Gospel message of salvation. The questions of "where should I go?" and "who should I tell?" are readily answered when we look only a few feet away. Are you on a bus? Are you in a grocery store? or Are you in a local library? Wherever you are, be it work, or the beach, that is the perfect place for you to share Jesus with another. We should not be ashamed ever of the Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ and there is no one person that so different that they are excluded from hearing and receiving this gift from God. Tell them all what Jesus has done right where you are at! This is what Jesus told the man that desired to follow him after being healed in Luke chapter 8:38,39 "Return to thine own house, and show how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him." Luke 8:39 158 |
