Discipleship II Week 6

Week Six: A Christian response to Jehovah's Witness

As a Disciple of Christ you will encounter many different beliefs. Some  that believe theirs is the correct way and the only way and some that believe all roads lead to heaven. The question is: How are we as followers of Jesus Christ to respond to these other beliefs? We must first look at this from the veiwpoint of how Jesus would respond to them? How would Jesus speak of them or to them? In the Bible we learn of many times in Jesus' ministry that he had to contend for the faith and rebuke and correct. In the book of Jude verse 3 we read it is our duty to contend for the faith. "that ye should earnestly contend for our faith." In the daily Christian walk from time to time we will confront those of other beliefs such as Mormons. The question in which we must answer is : How shall we respond to them? Join me as we read the following passages with the emphasis of training and equipping the Christian believer to respond to the Jehovah's Witness faith.

In a recent article titled "Jehovah's Witnesses and Another Gospel Craig branch writes:

Cults cannot thrive if their members are allowed to read the Bible by itself, unadulterated by the cult leaders. This is made outrageously and incredibly apparent from a recent Jehova's Witness magazine the Watchtower (8/15/81) article which stated, They say it is sufficient to read the Bible exclusively, either alone or in small groups at home. But strangely, through such Bible reading they have reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendoms clergy were teaching 100 years ago... (pg. 28-29, emphasis mine). The unblinking acceptance of this kind of statement demonstrates the twisted thinking of someone under the control of a cult.

Jehova's Witness publish the magazine called "The Watchtower" and promote the reading of this and other materials along with the Bible. The problem is that whatever words of Christ they choose to change or not follow they simply add words or teachings of their own.

Craig Branch continues on to say:

Cult leaders, in order to side-track their followers from the Bible, must (1) either add revelation (such as the Mormon church); (2)use the Bible only as a reference book and their own doctrinal books as primary (as Armstrongs Worldwide Church of God); or (3) rewrite the Bible with the cults alterations (as many New Age groups and the Watchtower); or (4) do a combination of all three (as the Watchtower Society of Jehovahs Witnesses).

In order to contend with these errors we must know what the Bible teaches us.

The Bible teaches that "there is a way that seems right to man but leadeth to destruction." Proverbs 12:15 It is easy to be decieved when we rely on our own understanding and that is exactly why cults have such an influence. When God's children do not study His truth and have His word hidden in their heart it easy for another to get in. "Beware of wolves in sheeps clothing" He has said, also "my sheep know my voice." How can we hear His voice if we not not what He says in His word? Don't be misled by the thieves that are out there.
