The True Vine Discipleship Program

Discipleship II Week 3

 Jesus’ life (After the crucifixion)

Not too long ago a book written by D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe asked the question: "What if Jesus had never been borne?" This was a great book in which I suggest that people read because it wonderfully captures all of the great contributions to the world because of the work of Jesus Christ. Truly he is the chief cornerstone to the foundation of all civilization. There are some that thought that by killing Jesus it would put an end to this revolution that sought to bring a greater quality of life for all in the world and would end the desire for the truth that revealed the hypocrisy within the religious system in the world. Instead it did just the opposite. Christianity only grew in numbers and Jesus lives today through multitudes of people, the likes of which no man can count and his works are far greater than ever recorded. Jesus has said: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth, the works that I do, shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." John 14:12 This week we are going to take a look into those works that he did to see if in fact these works are still being done, to verify that Jesus lives and is still at work saving souls! Jesus is Alive!

Read John 19: 28-42 What questions do you have after reading this?

Answer the following questions:

What phrase did Jesus use to indicate his death? __________________________________________________________________

What did the soldiers do to prove that Jesus was dead? ___________________________________________________________________

Why does it say that all these steps were taken to prove his death? ___________________________________________________________________

Who came and took the body of Jesus to prepare it for burial? ___________________________________________________________________

While many efforts were taken to prove that Jesus was put to death at the cross, still far greater efforts are taken today to suggest that Jesus didn't die at all, at least not the way the Bible says and not for the sins of the world! It seems that many can't accept that one man who came from heaven died for the whole world's sins that whosoever believeth on Him might have eternal life. They would take great measures to say that there is no heaven at all. These type of people would not believe no matter what the evidence suggested. The Bible is clear though when it states, "ye wicked and adultrous generation you seek after a sign but there shall no sign be given unto you, save the sign of Jonah." In the following scriptures we talk about signs, still with the evidence of God's word many refused to believe, but as it is written "The just shall live by faith." Let's look at the signs.

Did Jesus show himself to his disciples after he left the tomb? ____________________________________________________________________________

Why was it important for Jesus to show himself? ____________________________________________________________________________

Just because the Bible tells us "the just shall live by faith" or "blessed are those who believe without seeing" is it wrong to think that Jesus should give us a sign? Has Jesus given you any signs that He is all that He says? What are some testimonies that you or someone that you know can give about the great works of proof that Jesus has done that we might believe and by believing we might have life through His name?  In the versus below we read the reason why Jesus gave signs after His death that He in fact was alive.
